Staircase to heaven

Vlisco has been designing geometric patterns for a very long time, taking anonymous Dutch wax fabrics to Africa, where they got a name and meaning of their own. Over the years, some of these patterns became iconic.  The ‘staircase’ was one of them. This geometric wax fabric, also known as ‘L’Escalier’, has become one of Vlisco’s most famous designs. Showing you the way up, it refers to growing in your own self-confidence, experience and wisdom.

As most of our fabrics are yet to be named by the African women who sell and wear them, they leave the Dutch factory with nothing but a number. This abstract, decorative and geometric fabric is associated with the lives of two lovers far apart, looking at the same moon from such different positions - perhaps counting the nights before they get to see the moon from the same perspective again.
